Tansnowman spends a run with the Panda-Cam before crushing himself on a "bamboo durability test".  This video is a quick highlight of that run and a couple key moments leading up to it.  Just a quickee, nothing serious here...

The 2011 Subaru Freeskiing World Championships went off this last weekend on Snowbird's hallowed flanks, and it was a big mountain comp like no one was expecting.  Team Panda rider Chopo Diaz placed 3rd behind Drew "The Flyin' Hawaiian" Tabke and surprise competitor Sage Cattabriga-Alosa, as the competitors pressed the style meter to the max in what became an all mountain slopestyle competition.  Corked 360s and 720s were mixed in amongst backflips and 180s off Snowbird's massive cliffs, taking the term "natural terrain park" to another level.

Congratulations to Angel Collinson and Drew Tabke for taking 1st place not only in the Finals at Snowbird, but the overall World Tour!

Panda shout out to recent initiate Carlo Traverelli who also placed in the top 15 with a pair of Panda Poles-Thanks Carlo, nice work buddy!  We'd also like to tip our hats to Panda Team Manager Oakley White-Allen for taking a pair of Pandas to the finals and to Julian Carr, Seth Underwood, and Scotty VerMerris for killing it in the qualifier with our poles.

Tansnowman joined more than 300 other citizens for a rally outside the Salt Lake City Federal Building yesterday in support of Tim DeChristopher, who is being tried for derailing an oil and coal project in S. Utah last spring.  Tim placed fake bids at the auction which was for strip mining rights to thousands of acres of pristine Utah soil.  Tim's fake bids caused the entire mining auction to collapse, saving the land and its real treasure--its natural beauty.

Supporters sing songs of peaceful uprising and joyous resolve.

The Salt Lake Tribune reported yesterday:

A joyous throng of 300 protesters marched Monday morning from Salt Lake City’s Pioneer Park to Exchange Place across the street from a federal courthouse, where, later that afternoon, environmental folk hero Tim DeChristopher opened his four-day trial on two felony counts for monkey-wrenching an oil and gas lease auction.
No arrests nor problems were logged, but a series of noise complaints forced organizers to unplug their amplifiers. By midafternoon, after sitting cross-legged to sing John Lennon’s “Imagine,” the demonstrators locked arms, raised their “Stewardship” signs and crossed Main Street to continue singing on the courthouse steps.
The crowd included actor-activist Daryl Hannah, who arrived in Utah over the weekend to show her support for DeChristopher.
“This is the coolest protest I’ve ever been at,” Hannah said, “because I’ve never seen so many people smiling.”
As downtown professionals ducked out of their office buildings to snap pictures, Hannah urged the protesters to continue the fight.
“Big love, everybody,” she said to cheers. “Let’s keep it going. Let’s keep Tim out of jail.”

Tansnowman showing his support of Tim.

Huge thanks to all the supporters of Tim--some of whom spent almost 12 hours outside yesterday, singing, dancing, and chanting for Tim!

Tim faces up to 5 years in prison and a $750,000 fine for his disruption of the auction which was later proven illegal itself.  You can follow Tim and his story and offer your support on his website:  http://www.bidder70.org/

Good luck TIM!  Thank you for being a martyr for ecological justice...

The softness, elegance, and natural feel of Panda's hemp straps is unlike any other strap on the market.  They carry a certain rustic air which conjures up memories of ancient Phoenician sail boats or Persian camel caravans.  Their simplistic, cozy design is a delight under the palm as they naturally conform to a comfortable position.  And to know that these straps were grown like bales of hay and turned into a "rope" much like the ones used for sailing boats thousands of years ago is yet just another aspect of the deeper meaning behind our product.  To give you a better understanding of the care, love, and time which goes into our Mid and Fatty straps we take you behind the scenes:

The "Mid" Strap

The hemp webbing is sent from Romania to our "offices" in Salt Lake City, and is taken across town to be sewn together by Meggio Omego of Omega Elemental (http://nl-nl.facebook.com/group.php?gid=102364009809586).  Each Mid and Fatty strap comes blessed with her glowing personality.  Meggio specializes in boutique/alternative clothing design and has created a hugely popular series of hats, belts, and accessories which she sells in local Salt Lake boutiques.

Note:  Because of its current legal status, industrial hemp can only be imported to, but not actually grown in the U.S.

Meggio wearing one of her rad, functional belts (main).  Meggio's sewing machine with several Fatty Kush straps lined up for final stitching (right).

The straps then come back across town where they are washed and waterproofed with Penguin Brand's environmentally friendly water repellant.  The washing helps clean the fibers for waterproofing and also helps test the durability of the straps, while the waterproofing reduces icing on the straps.  After this process, loose fibers and threads are trimmed away and the straps are then hole punched by hand.  A grommet is also installed by hand and is used to secure the fibers and strengthen the attachment point of the strap.

Strap end with final grommet, ready to be mounted on a bamboo pole...

Our hemp straps are soulful and unique, but they are only one of many functional products developed from industrial hemp.  From motor oil to food, bio-resins, medicine, biofuels and textiles, hemp has an almost endless array of uses and there are constantly new ones being discovered.  Hemp has held an integral role throughout human history--going back thousands of years--and we are proud to be a part of its continued support as an industry.

While Panda team manager Oakley White-Allen cruised his way into the Finals at the US Extreme Freeskiing Championships in Crested Butte yesterday, Panda Poles tagged along with Tansnowman and PP photographer Mopho to the SLC International Tattoo Convention (www.slctattoo.com), where they dived into a little competition of their own...

Team Panda manager Oakley White-Allen spent today inspecting the venue for the US Extreme Skiing Championships in Crested Butte, Colorado.  He also took a little time to shoot some photos with local Crested Butte photographer Devon Balet (devonbaletphoto.com) and shows here how a proper "bonking" is done.  Oakley will be representing Panda at this competition, along with other Snowbird rider Chuck Mumford.  We send our wishes of safety and stoke to all the athletes, and thanks to MSI, Subaru, Sierra Nevada, and North Face for supporting events such as the Freeskiing World Tour.

For the past two seasons, OWA and Tansnowman have organized Mountain Meditations at Snowbird.  Mountain Meditations is a spiritual alternative to church whose denomination is snow. Whether one skis or snowboards, the mountains and snow help give peace at heart. They also provide a template for community enrichment and healthy methods of working with nature and self. Mountain meditations was created with the vision that we winter "recreationists" are doing more than just playing in the snow--we are praying in the snow.  If you are interested in joining us in conscious discussion & meditation, we meet every Sunday at high noon on the Tram Deck in front of Christy Sports.  You can also follow us on our Facebook page:  Mountain Meditations.  Aloha!
